Queensland’s Blackwater mine collapses leaving one injured, one unaccounted for

Emergency services were called to reports of an industrial incident at Curragh coal mine off Blackwater Cooroorah Rd, in central Queensland, shortly after 3pm on January 2.

“Initial information indicates one man was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and one other man remains unaccounted for,” Queensland Police Service said.

Police are assisting partner agencies with their investigations into the collapse.

In January 2020, a 33-year-old worker was killed after being trapped under heavy machinery, leading to several charges under the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act including making industrial manslaughter an offence for an employer or senior officer.

Another worker was fatally injured at the mine in November 2021.
