Jack Finney’s novel The Body Snatchers has seen quite a few film adaptations since its publication in 1955. Of course, there’s the first of the bunch, the classic 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. There’s Abel Ferrara’s Body Snatchers (1993). And who could forget the Nicole Kidman-led The Invasion (2007)? Just kidding. We’d all like to forget. Yet despite numerous attempts, the scariest, far-and-away best of the bunch remains Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978).

From a knockout cast to skin-prickling atmosphere and stunning practical effects, it doesn’t get much creepier than Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers. The film isn’t just one of the greatest remakes in the universe…it’s a masterclass of suspense that supports an argument for the ’70s as the best decade of horror. Don’t believe me? That’s fine. The 1978 Body Snatchers is all about mistrust, an element you’ll want to experience for yourself now that the film just landed on Prime Video.

What’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) About?

Kaufman’s adaptation drops viewers into the bustling city of San Francisco. There, we meet characters ranging from health experts to a poet, all of whom come across something strange happening in their midst. Mysterious alien pods have arrived, invading and replicating the city’s residents one by one. They look, feel, and sound just like those that they imitate, making them nearly impossible to spot. The small group of friends soon realize it’s up to them to stop the replicators. But with time running out and the invasion growing in numbers, can they put an end to the body snatchers before they take over the world?

this was so good btw. the idea of all of a sudden something feeling uncannily out of place and empty with the person you’ve known for years gets scarier the more you think about it. the rational fear of conformism toying with the irrational fears regarding the “outsider/foreign”. https://t.co/Nbdhb9kBP6

Movies don’t have this level of sauce anymore. Brooke Adams could do a weird thing with her eyes and they just wrote it in!

A Master Class in Terror

From the get-go, Kaufman’s take on Finney’s novel establishes a masterful tension that no other version reaches. The novel about people gradually being taken over by alien invaders has always been inherently scary, sure. Yet the filmmaker’s calculated direction brings that terror to new heights. Faces peer from the shadows. Frequent closeups instill squirmy discomfort. Images of characters framed to be half-visible or in mirrors create an eerie sense of duality, prompting us to question everyone. Quiet moments of steady eeriness explode into stark horror. It’s the sort of film you can watch over and over again, catching something new in the background each time.

Of course, it isn’t just Kaufman’s brilliant direction that makes this Body Snatchers the A+ student of the class. You can’t talk about the film without mentioning the star-studded cast. Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum, Veronica Cartwright, Leonard freaking Nimoy…a talented group that all bring their best. That’s important, too, because in many ways, Kaufman’s take is the most human of the Body Snatcher films. While the original focuses on a more general fear like America’s horror over communism, Kaufman’s film slithers deeper. Here, we’re taken into the intimate relationships of characters, the terror of not knowing if you can trust your spouse…or yourself. Discovering someone you love is no longer there beneath the flesh of their body…nothing’s more devastating or frightening than that. An experience that occurs often on the way to one of the most unsettling conclusions in horror history.
