Popular cafe started by 12-year-old Payton, closes doors with new owner set to continue the legacy

The coffee shop, famed for being started by a 12-year-old, Paytons, launched in November last year, giving locals a taste of what makes Melbourne coffee shops buzz, with a menu influenced by flavours from the United States. Now, the crew have announced they’re closing the doors after a short run on  Belair Road.

When creating the cafe, owner Ben and his daughter Payton drew inspiration from their travels across the globe. Ben said in a chat with Glam Adelaide last year that the layout was influenced by Japanese and Singaporean cafes, where people sit around the bar and chat with the barista. The duo also took notes from the United States, especially LA, where people sit at a bar and share a social and open coffee.

Local produce was at the forefront of the business, where beans were from B3 in Blackwood, milk was from Fleurieu Milk Company, and pastries and bagels were sourced from local bakeries. Ben previously said that he sat down with Payton to discuss the importance of supporting other local businesses, regardless of the cost. He said that when South Australian businesses support each other, it keeps the economy thriving.

Unfortunately, however, despite extraordinary customer reviews, Payton and her dad decided to close the store due to low foot traffic.

On social media, Payton thanked everyone who walked through the doors, shared a smile and became part of their story.

“Although we are closing, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who visited, supported us, and believed in what we set out to create,” she said.

“Your encouragement has meant the world.

“Lesson learnt. When the effort outweighs the outcome, it’s okay to choose yourself.”

The final update, a few weeks ago, announced exciting news, a new owner has purchased the café space, hoping to expand and continue the legacy Paytons left behind.
