In a historic first, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aircraft made a landing at the Northeast’s first Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) in Assam’s Moran on Saturday morning, marking a significant milestone in the state’s strategic and infrastructure development.
The specially designed stretch of national highway has been developed to enable fighter jets of the Indian Air Force to undertake take-offs and landings during emergencies.
The Prime Minister is on a day-long visit to poll-bound Assam where he will also launch development projects worth over Rs 5,500 crore.
Modi arrived at the Chabua airfield earlier in the day, where he was received by Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other senior state government officials.
From Chabua, the Prime Minister boarded an Indian Air Force C-130J aircraft to travel to the Emergency Landing Facility located on the Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh district. He landed at the 4.2-km-long facility, built at a cost of Rs 100 crore, making it the first such infrastructure in the Northeast region.
Officials said the Prime Minister is also scheduled to witness a 40-minute aerial display by the Indian Air Force, featuring fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters.
Following the event, PM Modi will depart for Guwahati from the ELF aboard the C-130J aircraft.
