Penfolds winemaker Peter Gago receives one of wine’s highest international honours

South Australian wine icon Peter Gago has received one of the global wine industry’s highest honours, recognised for a career that has helped shape the international reputation of Australian wine.

The longtime Chief Winemaker of Penfolds was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Meininger Awards in Düsseldorf, Germany, on March 14, on the eve of the influential ProWein international wine trade show.

The award, presented by German publishing house Meininger Verlag, celebrates individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the global wine industry through innovation, leadership and international influence. Past recipients include some of the world’s most respected figures in wine, including Marchese Piero Antinori, Bruno Paillard, Angelo Gaja and Marvin Shanken.

Gago joined Penfolds in 1989 and became Chief Winemaker in 2002, making him only the fourth person to hold the role in the winery’s 182-year history. Over the past several decades, he has become one of Australia’s most recognisable wine ambassadors, helping elevate Penfolds to one of the most respected names in the international wine market.

Throughout his career, Gago has been recognised with numerous prestigious honours reflecting both his influence and dedication to the craft. In 2012 he received the Winemakers’ Winemaker award from The Institute of Masters of Wine and Drinks Business Magazine. In 2017 he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service to the Australian wine industry.

Further recognition followed in 2018 when he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of South Australia, while in 2021 he was inducted into the Decanter Hall of Fame. More recently, Wine Communicators of Australia named him South Australia’s Legend of the Vine in 2025.

Upon receiving the Meininger Lifetime Achievement Award, Gago reflected on his long relationship with Penfolds and the enduring pull of winemaking.

“This award is profoundly humbling and I’m honoured to be here in Germany to receive it. It’s hard to believe it’s been almost four decades since I joined Penfolds and in that time, the ‘grip of the grape’ has never loosened; it’s a privilege to help preserve Penfolds legacy and spread the word on Australian wines around the world.”

Under Gago’s leadership, Penfolds has continued to evolve while maintaining the signature style that has defined the brand for generations. His tenure has seen the winery balance tradition with innovation, expanding its international footprint while continuing to celebrate the heritage that underpins the Penfolds name.

Among the more experimental projects during his leadership have been cross-hemisphere collaborations with Champagne Thiénot and the Frey family, alongside innovative releases including the g3, g4 and g5 multi-vintage Grange blends, V Chardonnay and the ultra-rare Penfolds Ampoule.

Together, these projects have reinforced Penfolds’ reputation for both creativity and craftsmanship, while helping ensure Australian wine remains firmly on the global stage.

For South Australia’s wine community, Gago’s latest accolade serves as further recognition of a career that has helped shape the identity of Australian winemaking for nearly four decades.
