PCB to Ban ‘Un-Islamic’ Sponsors in PSL

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has prepared a strict plan to maintain the clean and transparent image of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Under the new framework, future franchise agreements will clearly prohibit the promotion of betting, gambling or any banned products.

According to details, some PSL franchises were previously seen using surrogate advertising, a practice in which gambling companies promote themselves by making minor changes to their names. This allowed betting-related brands to appear indirectly during PSL matches.

A few years ago, Multan Sultans captain Mohammad Rizwan raised concerns over this issue. During a PSL match, he covered a controversial sponsor’s logo on his shirt with a sticker in protest. Following strict action by the government, surrogate advertising was stopped in the league.

To prevent any similar attempts in the future, the PCB is now taking firm steps to ensure the tournament’s reputation remains intact.

Sources said that agreements with new franchises will clearly state that advertising related to alcohol, tobacco, betting, gambling or any prohibited products will not be allowed.

The contracts will also require franchises to avoid advertisements that violate government policy or offend religious and cultural sensitivities.

In addition to advertising regulations, new financial conditions have also been outlined.

Each franchise will be required to deposit 75 percent of its payable fee at least 60 days before the scheduled date of the first match of the tournament. The remaining 25 percent must be paid no later than one day before the start of the PSL.
