Naseem Shah has landed in fresh trouble after the Pakistan Cricket Board has announced a hefty fine for violating clauses of his central contract and breaching social media guidelines.
The action followed a deleted post from his X account that questioned the treatment of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the PSL opening ceremony.
The Rawalpindiz fast bowler has been sanctioned with a Rs. 20 million (2 Crore) fine for the tweet, which is believed to be the largest fine in Pakistan Cricket history.
PCB had first issued him a show cause notice on March 27, then completed disciplinary proceedings on Monday. The board also said Naseem had already terminated his social media adviser, who will now be blacklisted from working with PCB contracted players.
It also comes only weeks after Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad was reportedly fined PKR 5 million each following the team’s disappointing campaign, which means Naseem has now found himself caught in back-to-back off field controversies.
The timing makes the blow even tougher. Last year, PCB denied Naseem a No Objection Certificate for The Hundred under its workload management policy, a decision that reportedly cost him around Rs45 million after Birmingham Phoenix had signed him.
The board argued that Pakistan’s packed calendar and his injury history left little room for additional franchise cricket.
On the field, things have not improved yet. Naseem Shah returned expensive figures of 0 for 51 in Rawalpindiz’s five wicket loss to Peshawar Zalmi in PSL 11.
Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars’ contingent of Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf were also in the spotlight after allegations of ball-tampering were levied by umpire Faisal Afridi during their match against Karachi Kings. It is still left to be seen what the sanctions on the allegations will be, if proven true.
