A new Soreike! Anpanman anime movie, subtitled Pantan to Yakusoku no Hoshi, will begin screening on June 26. A “special” visual and video were released with the reveal.

The popular Anpanman, a superhero with an anpan (bread stuffed with sweet red bean paste) head, debuted as a picture book character by Takashi Yanase. Anpanman is generally considered to have first appeared in 1973 as part of the Kinder Ohanashi Ehon magazine, although his Japanese Wikipedia page says that an earlier, human version of the character had existed since 1968 in other publications (the Yanase Takashi Memorial Hall website lists Anpanman’s 1969 appearance in the magazine PHP as his debut).

The Soreike! Anpanman TV anime begin airing in 1988, and the first anime movie came out in 1989.

Anpanman holds the Guiness World Record for “Most characters in an animation series.”
