Pakistan has made a fresh oil and gas discovery at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well in the Nashpa Block, District Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding to the country’s domestic energy resource base, according to a notification issued to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) by Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL).
OGDCL, the operator of the Nashpa Exploration License with a 65 percent working interest, made the discovery in partnership with Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), which holds 30 percent, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) with a 5 percent carried interest.
The find was made in the Samana Suk and Shinawari formations at the Baragzai X-01 well.
During Cased Hole Drill Stem Test-03 (CHDST-03), the well flowed at a rate of 3,100 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 8.15 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas through a 32/64-inch choke, with a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,010 psig, the company said in its disclosure.
The Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well was spudded on December 30, 2024, to test the hydrocarbon potential of multiple formations, including Lockhart, Hangu, Lumshiwal, Samana Suk, Shinawari, Datta and Kingriali. The well was drilled to a total depth of 5,170 metres into the Kingriali Formation. Earlier testing in the Kingriali and Datta formations had already resulted in oil and gas discoveries, further strengthening the prospectivity of the block.
OGDCL said the latest discovery will help mitigate Pakistan’s energy supply-demand gap by adding indigenous resources and will contribute to the hydrocarbon reserves base of the company, its joint venture partners, and the country.
