Nita Ambani’s Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla sari frames lace through borders and blouse

Nita Ambani wears an Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla sari from the Burano collection, a reference to the needle lace made on the island of Burano, Italy, in a pale rose-pink georgette that reads light on the body but detailed at the edges. The colour stays even across the drape, setting up the lace embroidery as the defining feature.

Embellishment is concentrated along the borders, pallu edge and blouse where lace motifs are meticulously hand embroidered in silk threads with sequins and pearls. The blouse mirrors the border pattern exactly, creating a visual loop that keeps the eye moving across the look rather than settling in one place.

The Burano reference draws from the island’s lace-making tradition, particularly the openwork language associated with punto in aria, a freehand technique creating intricate motifs such as delicate florals, geometric patterns, and graceful forms that would later define Burano lace as one of Europe’s most coveted artisanal traditions, admired for its precision and enduring beauty. Here, that history is translated through embroidery rather than replicated, giving the sari its delicacy.

The jewellery comes from her own collection of distinct pieces: a lotus-shaped diamond choker surrounded by Basra pearls and a Basra pearl bracelet. With the drape kept spare and the colour understated, the sari’s impact comes from where the work is placed, not how much of it appears

“Re-think this dreamy pink colour in a ’50s evening look. Work with a pink silk structured gown, an off-the-shoulder and cinched at the waist. Pair it with jewellery akin to Nita Ambani working with pearls and diamonds, set in a traditional Hyderabad pearl design or French style. Ditch the jewellery on the arms and opt for a high-heeled pair of pumps,” says Vogue India fashion associate Divya Balakrishnan.
