AMC Networks’ Sentai Filmworks announced that Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s Ninja Scroll anime film will receive a 4K restoration adaptation that will screen at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival on February 15, 2026 at 10:00 pm CET. Encore screenings will follow on February 16, 2026 and February 22, 2026.
Ninja Scroll (also known as Jubei Ninpucho in Japanese) is one of 10 works from nine different countries and the first anime film to be featured as part of the Berlinale Classics section of the festival’s program.
The 4K restoration is produced by Sentai Filmworks under the supervision of Kawajiri, which “involved a 4K scan of the original 35mm negative.” It was first released in Japan on June 5, 1993, with Madhouse in charge of the animation production. Kawajiri also served as the anime film’s screenwriter and original character designer.
HIDIVE, in collaboration with Sentai Filmworks and Iconic Events Release, screened Ninja Scroll across 500 theaters in the U.S. as part of the AX Cinema Nights series, in commemoration of the film’s 30th anniversary. The screenings took place for three days in September 2024.
Outside of the Berlin International Film Festival, the 4K version of Ninja Scroll will be available as a limited edition Blu-ray Steel Book in 4K UHD in early 2027.
