Cental Coast Mariners came from behind in the sweltering heat against the Newcastle Jets to win the second F3 Derby of the season at No.2 Sportsground.

The match wasn’t the typical hot conditions struggle, with both teams having had early chances in an end-to-end contest, Central Coast’s Peta Trimis and Newcastle’s Kelli Brown looked the most dangerous but both goals remained undisturbed.

It took until stoppage time of the first half, but eventually Brown gave Newcastle the lead with a powerful strike from the top of the penalty area.

The back-and-forth style of the game continued in the second half, with Central Coast equalising just seven minutes after the break, Trimis’ looping shot from outside of the box left goalkeeper Anna Leat with no chance.

The Mariners hit the front with 20 minutes to go when golden boot leader Annalise Rasmussen outmuscled Zoe Karipidis to volley in Peta Trimis’ cross, from the right.

Newcastle threw everything at Central Coast in the last 10 minutes in search of an equaliser, and it looked like they had scored when Lauren Allen volleyed a rebound on goal, only for Annabel Martin to athletically clear the ball off the line.

The win for Central Coast brings them back up to third on the table, while Newcastle stay in eighth spot.
