Teen horror means a lot of things. To the acclaimed, late critic Roger Ebert, teen horror was often used as a pejorative for low-budget slashers, otherwise known as “dead teenager flicks.” For others, teen horror is a gateway into horror for younger audiences—everyone has to start somewhere, and Tarot is a better start than, say, Martyrs. Some exceed all expectations, however, and Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All is one of the best teen horror movies of all time. You’re in luck if you missed it back in 2022—Bones and All was recently added to Netflix.
Bones and All, adapted from Camille DeAngelis’ novel of the same name, follows Maren Yearly (Taylor Russell), a teenage girl with an insatiable thirst for flesh. After a startling incident, she’s abandoned by her father and sets off to find her mother, desperate to learn more about where her, uh, particular proclivities might have come from. Along the way, she meets Lee (Timothée Chalamet), a young boy about her age with the same urges.

Teen Horror
It sounds very cannibalistic and gnarly—and it is, trust me—but Bones and All, at its core, is a tragedy. A gut-wrenching one. Appropriately R-rated, the biggest punches aren’t the torn flesh or severed fingers—it’s watching a young girl rejected by family and friends alike, desperate, yet unable, to find a place in the world that she might call home. It’s a (devastating) coming-of-age romance packaged as a cannibal thriller, and no one could make that dissonant pairing work quite like Guadagnino.
In our own review of the film from 2022, where Bones and All ranked as Dread Central’s sixth best horror movie of the year, Drew Tinnin wrote, “Bones and All feels like a film that came from the same director who made Call Me by Your Name and Suspiria. Luca Guadagnino has proven that he’s a master of the craft, and the story of two runaways cursed with an insatiable hunger plays to the director’s strengths beautifully. This is one of the most striking films of the year. It’s underseen and deserves your attention.”

What do you think? Any plans to check out Bones and All on Netflix? It was one of my favorite movies of 2022, so I think you should carve out some time as soon as you can. If you do, let me know your thoughts over on Twitter and Instagram.
