Mumbai Indians chased down 221 against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium, with Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma powering a statement win in their IPL 2026 opener.
Mumbai Indians made a strong start to their IPL 2026 campaign with a six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders in a run-heavy contest at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing 221, MI got home at 224 for 4 in 19.1 overs, finishing the job with five balls to spare.
The chase was driven by Ryan Rickelton, who struck 81, and Rohit Sharma, who made 78 in a commanding top-order effort that kept Mumbai in control of a demanding target. The pair gave MI the platform they needed before Hardik Pandya added 18 not out and Naman Dhir stayed unbeaten on 5 to see the side over the line.
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders had posted 220 for 4 from their 20 overs after Ajinkya Rahane led the innings with 67 and Angkrish Raghuvanshi added 51. Finn Allen also chipped in with 37 at the top, helping KKR build the kind of total that would have been enough on many nights.
For Mumbai, Shardul Thakur made the key breakthroughs and finished with figures of 3 for 39, a spell that helped prevent Kolkata from pushing even further beyond the 220 mark. He was named Player of the Match.
The result gives Mumbai early momentum and sets the tone for what already looks like another explosive IPL season. For Kolkata, there was plenty to admire with the bat, but conceding a 221 chase will leave them with immediate questions around control in the middle and death overs.
