‘Mother of Flies’ Trailer Brings Fresh Folk Horror to Shudder Soon

If you don’t already know The Adams Family, I strongly suggest you change that. The DIY filmmaking family, consisting of Toby Poser, John Adams, and Zelda Adams, has become known for their visually charged, unique horror films, often rooted in ghosts or witchcraft. Hellbender remains one of the coolest movies centered around dark magic that I’ve seen in years. The Adams’ newest outing, Mother of Flies, just became the first American movie to ever take home the Cheval Noir Award for Best Film at the Fantasia International Film Festival. And now we have a shocking new trailer and poster for the film, coming to Shudder next month!

Mother of Flies introduces audiences to Mickey (Zelda Adams), a young woman diagnosed with a deadly illness but far from ready to die. Together, she and her father (John Adams) seek the help of recluse in the forest, Solveig (Toby Poser). For three days, the woods-y woman puts Mickey through extreme rituals of death magic. As buried secrets reach the surface and the veil between the living and the dead unravels, Mickey must face dark truths that only the dead and the dying can know.

In his review out of Fantasia, Dread’s Editorial Director, Josh Korngut, had this to say about Mother of Flies: “The Adams Family has returned triumphant with Mother of Flies, once again jarring the tar-like, sticky substance that this real-life blood clan is so uniquely capable of conjuring. They’ve returned from the woods, having crafted yet another putrid thing of beauty and massaged it into something fresh, wrong, evil, and yet somehow also utterly pure…Toby Poser, Zelda Adams, and John Adams are back with what may be their greatest work to date.”

The rest of you will have to decide for yourself where Mother of Flies ranks amongst the films of the Adams. But I must say, this trailer is full of the gruesome, rotten yet strangely breathtaking imagery that has drawn me and others to the filmmaking family. Not to mention a premise that appears to be going in some unique directions.

Mother of Flies also stars Lulu Adams, James Lindsay, Noble Wilson-Eiden, and Jessica Beveridge.

Raise the dead with Mother of Flies when the film begins streaming on Shudder on January 23rd, 2026.
