Meet the Governess: Former home of NBL star Aron Baynes hits the market for million

It’s a house so striking it has become somewhat of a local legend, stopping passersby in their tracks.

Known as the Governess, the home has recently undergone an incredible restoration by luxury developer and construction company Graya.

Current owners Clare Gorman and Justin Perron purchased the property from NBL star Aron Baynes in October 2022 for $5.8 million.

Mr Baynes had already commenced renovations on the property with Graya, but a change of circumstances saw him list the property before it was complete.

“It took just over a year to renovate the home and it was a labour of love,” Ms Gorman said.

“Graya executed the renovation beautifully and it’s quite surreal to live in such a stunning home.”

It is considered the older sibling of Government House, as it was designed by the same architect Benjamin Backhouse and sits just across the road.

The listing stated that the “landmark reimagining honours its storied heritage while introducing a bold contemporary vision that reshapes how the home is experienced”.

Set over three storeys, the property features five bedrooms, three bathrooms plus powder room, study, and wine cellar with a wet bar and tasting lounge.

Special attention was paid to the kitchen, which Ms Gorman said was designed for the ultimate foodie and entertainer.

“A massive 4.5-metre marble island anchors the space, surrounded by windows that wrap around the house, offering leafy views even from deep within the butler’s pantry,” she said.

This space flows out onto the outdoor deck where Ms Gorman said the Brisbane city skyline acts as a “glittering backdrop for Sunday afternoons”.
