Investigators say the convicted bank robber was on supervised release when agents found ammunition, firearm parts, and a loaded pistol in his Mansfield home.

A Mansfield man was arrested Thursday and charged with unlawfully possessing ammunition as a convicted felon, federal prosecutors announced Friday.

Michael Kennedy, 48, was charged with one count of being a felon in possession of ammunition and remains in federal custody following an initial appearance in federal court in Boston, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts.

Prosecutors say Kennedy is prohibited from possessing ammunition because of several prior convictions, including bank robbery and felon in possession of ammunition in federal court, as well as armed robbery and witness intimidation in Norfolk Superior Court.

Authorities allege Kennedy was on supervised release for a 2021 federal conviction for being a felon in possession of ammunition at the time of the offense.

According to charging documents, investigators found Kennedy had been ordering firearms parts online and shipping them to his Mansfield home, including components used to build M-16- and AR-15-style rifles.

During a search of his home, authorities allegedly discovered several privately made firearm frames, a 3D printer, and ammunition in multiple calibers.

Investigators also found a 5.7-caliber pistol tucked into the arm of a reclining chair where Kennedy had been sleeping, according to the charging documents. The firearm was allegedly loaded with 22 rounds of ammunition, including one round in the chamber.

The ammunition recovered during the search included CBC 9mm ammunition, JAG 9mm ammunition, and FN 5.7 x 28mm ammunition, prosecutors said.

If convicted, Kennedy faces up to 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
