Man arrested after allegedly stealing farmer’s fuel and leading a police chase in Adelaide’s north

A young man will spend the long weekend behind bars, accused of stealing a diesel fuel tank and leading police on a dangerous chase in a stolen four‑wheel drive north of Adelaide.

Police allege the 19‑year‑old stole the tank from a Reeves Plains sports club and the vehicle from a Korunye business earlier in the week.

CCTV captured the moment the alleged thief made his getaway — hauling a trailer loaded with hundreds of litres of diesel, now one of the nation’s most valuable resources.

7NEWS understands the man had siphoned fuel from a nearby farm and was searching for more.

“He drained the fuel out of our fuel tank,” sports club member Steven Burgess told 7NEWS.

“Just any little thing he could throw in his car.”

It’s alleged the getaway vehicle wasn’t his either, with police confirming it was stolen.

“He wouldn’t have stopped… until police had stopped him,” Burgess said.

Patrols deployed tyre spikes at Lewiston, sending the four‑wheel drive through a fence and into a paddock. The driver tried to run but was arrested in a nearby glasshouse.

“Society needs to be protected from people like this guy,” Burgess said.

The diesel — described as “liquid gold” — is now contaminated and unusable, even if the farmer were to get it back.

A 19‑year‑old Riverlea Park man was denied police bail and will face court on Tuesday.
