A Maine man is in critical condition after a car struck him while he was helping a stranded driver, police said.
The collision occurred Monday night on I-95 northbound in Veazie, Maine, police said.
According to Maine State Police, an 18-year-old woman from Bangor lost control of her car due to snowy road conditions and crashed into the highway’s median. She got out of the car and climbed behind the guardrail, police said.
The 54-year-old man from Medford, Maine stopped to help the woman and joined her behind the guardrail while his wife called 911, police said.
While the man and woman were standing outside, they were struck by a passing car driven by a 19-year-old woman from Old Town, Maine. Police believe that woman lost control of her car due to the snowy conditions. The two victims were thrown down an embankment.
Police believe the man may have been attempting to shield the woman during the collision.
The man suffered serious injuries and is in critical condition, police said.
The 18-year-old woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was also transported to a nearby hospital, police said.
Investigators do not believe that speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
The incident remains under investigation.
