LONG TIME AGO IN BETHNALL GREEN

LONG TIME AGO IN BETHNALL GREEN

Long time ago in Bethnall Green

Was born a baby boy

Peter Greenbaum was his name

Who ‘d later bring us great joy.

Blues in his hands and in his heart

The saddest you’ll have heard

Melancholy intertwined

With the sweetness of a bird

Hark now hear his plaintive cry

His torments drove him mad

They’re in the blue notes and the bends

We miss his playing so bad.

Peter lived with daemons

And drugs they took their toll

But listen closely now my friends

To the pain inside Peter’s soul.

Who knows what they did for him

The reefers, smack and crack

But soon his time would sadly end

As front man of Fleetwood Mac.

Hark now hear the angels sing

Sometimes he made them cry

His talent made them envious

So they summoned him up on high.

He leaves behind his legacy

And we are left here to mourn

But Peter’s happy playing there

For he wished he’d never been born.

The angels sit at Peter’s feet

Their gain has been our loss

The star of Fleetwood Mac has been

Their weight and albatross.

Hark now hear his plaintive cry

His torments drove him mad

They’re in the blue notes and the bends

We miss his playing so bad.
