It was a revenge 10 years in the making. A man brutally hacked his rival to death in Karnataka after he allegedly eloped with his mother in 2016. After the murder, the accused, identified as Erayya Mathapati, stood with his foot on the victim’s body and waited at the spot until police arrived.
The incident, which happened near Hoolikatti village in Savadatti, a temple town known for the Yellamma mandir, on Monday evening, has left locals stunned. The victim, Basappa Hosmani (51), a resident of Basadoni village, was intercepted on the road by Mathapati and attacked with a sharp weapon, police said. Hosmani sustained around 16 stab wounds and died on the spot.
However, the revenge saga didn’t end there. In a scene straight out of a Tollywood movie, Mathapati, with blood dripping from his white vest, then stood on the victim’s body. He didn’t budge as passersby watched the horror unfold. It was a grudge he held for 10 long years.
He then called the police himself and confessed to the crime. The police eventually arrived and arrested him.

Police said Mathapati harboured a decade-old grudge against Hosmani after he eloped with his mother. It brought disrepute to his family. After the incident, Hosmani settled in Kolhapur and returned to Savadatti only recently.
Police believe Mathapati had been waiting for Hosmani’s return. When he returned, Mathapati chalked out a plan to kill him. On Monday evening, he executed the brazen attack.
A murder case has been registered, and the victim’s body has been sent for a post-mortem. Police are now trying to piece together the exact sequence of events and recover the murder weapon.
