Opposition Leader R. Ashok on Thursday (January 22, 2026) said Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot had only “performed his duty” and alleged that the Congress had “made it dramatic”. He was reacting to the Governor’s brief address on Day 1 of the Joint Legislature Session on January 22, 2026.
He recalled that this was not the first instance of such friction between a government and the Raj Bhavan, pointing to a similar episode during the tenure of former Governor Hansraj Bharadwaj in the then B.S. Yediyurappa government.
Mr. Ashok alleged that Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil had attempted to “block the Governor’s way” inside the Assembly and demanded that action be taken.
“The Congress is trying to make the Governor act to their whims. By doing so, they have insulted the House and the Constitution,” he said, adding that he would write to the Speaker seeking action against members who “disregarded respect” and obstructed the Governor’s exit.
Meanwhile, Congress MLC B. Hariprasad, who came in the way as the governor was leaving, was brushed aside by the governor’s security staff.
BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra also condemned the conduct of the Treasury benches, saying Congress members had “misused the House”. He said the party appeared to believe that “job guarantee is only for Congress workers” and alleged that its “conspiracy to create unrest in the State using the Governor” had failed. “The government should correct itself,” he added.
