Jaylen Brown is 29-years old and at the top of his NBA game. He’ll have three years left on his supermax contract after this season is over, and his career could end up being much longer than that.
But he does have a wide range of interests and he told reporters during All-Star weekend that he’s considering a different kind of competition after he retires from basketball.
The 6-foot-6-inch, 223-pound Brown said that he is thinking about fighting professionally as a boxer or perhaps in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
“To be honest, I’ve toyed with this and I’ve talked to some people,” Brown said. “Maybe post part of my career, I’d love to partake in something like UFC or even boxing. I’ve talked to Dana White about some stuff, but we’ll see as things go on. We’ll see.”
According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, White thought Brown was “messing” with him at first. But there appears to be some “serious” interest from Brown in the sport, according to the report.
“He’s … training at the [UFC PI], the last couple days he was over there working on his Muay Thai,” White said. “I think it’s awesome these guys want to try and fight.”
Brown is averaging a career-high 29.3 points per game while shooting the ball at a 48.3 percent clip. The Celtics, who have been without Jayson Tatum this season, are second in the Eastern Conference behind the Pistons.
He has also been live-streaming content on his Twitch feed as a way to communicate to fans directly.
Bill Nye was a part of the stream when he came to Celtics Media Day at the Auerbach Center and performed science experiments. A September episode with YouTuber IShowSpeed showed Brown putting his own spin on the Boston Tea Party by shooting buckets of tea into the Boston Harbor with a setshot-like form. He also demonstrated some Muay Thai moves during the episode with IShowSpeed.
Brown launched an apparel brand, 741 Performance, in 2024 after years of selling clothing under his 7uice brand. He is also the founder of the 7uice Foundation, which aims bridge gaps for youth from underserved communities though educational opportunities. He hosted a college fair at the Yawkey Boys and Girls Club of Roxbury last month.
Brown’s father, Marselles Brown, is a former professional heavyweight boxer. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla is an avid mixed-martial arts fan. Brown’s grandfather, Willie Brown, has helped train the Celtics star in the past, with boxing pads being a part of the regimen.
