Paranormal Activity didn’t invent the found footage horror genre, but it did help light the match that set the trend ablaze. Created by Oren Peli, the original film was reportedly made for around $15,000, yet went on to rake in almost $200 million, making it one of the most profitable films ever made. Seven sequels later, the franchise about malevolent ghosts and demons caught on camera continues to haunt audiences. And now, we’ve learned that Paramount Pictures and Blumhouse-Atomic Monster have tapped an exciting filmmaker for the relaunch!
According to THR, Ian Tuason is in final negotiations to direct the eight Paranormal Activity film. The Toronto-based filmmaker has made a career off of viral horror shorts on Youtube. His debut feature, Undertone, recently won the audience award for a Canadian movie at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival. A24 has since acquired the film.
If you’re wondering why Tuason, Undertone itself follows a podcaster who covers supernatural occurrences and is sent recordings of a pregnant couple’s encounters with the paranormal…a story that parallels her own. I have yet to see the film myself, but it sure sounds like Tuason should fit right into the haunted house of the Paranormal Activity franchise.
James Wan (Saw) will be on board as a producer for the first time with the series.
We do not yet have any plot details on the eight Paranormal Activity film other than it is intended to be a reboot.
In the meantime, you can next catch Tuason’s Undertone when it plays the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.
