Stefon Diggs is a free agent after the Patriots opted to release him earlier this month, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that his time in New England is over for good.

Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf told reporters Thursday that he’s keeping all options open as he looks to improve the roster.

“I wouldn’t say the door is closed,” Wolf said, according to Christopher Price of The Boston Globe. “I mean, again, we’re going to look through every way we possibly can to help the team.”

Diggs’s cap hit was set to jump significantly this season, from $10.5 million to $26.5 million. New England chose to get out of the back-loaded deal and opt for a younger, cheaper addition at receiver by bringing in Romeo Doubs.

It is not yet clear what the free-agent market might look like for Diggs at this stage in his career.

Diggs will turn 33 in November, before the end of the regular season. He has a pending criminal case that he is dealing with. The Patriots’ offense as a whole wasn’t as productive during the playoffs, and Diggs was no exception. He averaged 3.5 catches and 27.5 yards per game over New England’s four postseason games, with just one touchdown over that span.

However, he was productive during the regular season, posting his seventh 1,000 yard season in eight years. He had a team-high 85 catches on 102 targets and hauled in four touchdowns. He was ready to go for the season opener despite having offseason ACL surgery. He played in all 17 regular-season games and had carved out a leadership role in the locker room.

“There were a variety of factors looking at financials, ability. A lot of things go into this. We have nothing but respect for Stefon. He was an absolute warrior for us, as I said to him multiple times after games. I just really appreciate all his contributions to the team.”

Wolf was asked if there was anything Diggs could have done differently to stay on the team.

“I’m not sure how to answer that,” Wolf said. “We factor in a lot of different things and ultimately we decided to move forward. We wish him nothing but the best as we told him when we spoke with him, and he was super classy. As we told him, any way we can help out, we will.”

The Patriots have several of their top receivers including Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte, DeMario Douglas, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism under contact for next season. They’ve added Doubs to the mix.

Rumors of a potential AJ Brown pursuit have not gone away as the need for a true No. 1 receiver continues to exist.

It seems like Diggs’s name may keep floating around too, until he signs elsewhere or the Patriots become ready to publicly say they are closing the door.
