A serving Indian Navy Lance Naik has been arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI and sharing sensitive naval information, officials said on Tuesday.
The arrest was made by the Uttar Pradesh Anti Terrorism Squad following intelligence inputs about suspected espionage activities linked to the naval personnel.
The accused, identified as Adarsh Kumar, also known as Lucky, is a resident of Kagarol in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra district and was posted at the Indian Navy’s Southern Command base in Kochi, Kerala.
SENSITIVE INFORMATION SHARED WITH ISI
According to investigators, Kumar had allegedly been passing sensitive information related to the Navy to handlers linked to Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence.
Officials said he shared photographs and details of important naval information with the ISI through digital communication.
The probe has also found that Kumar transferred money from his personal account to the handler he was in contact with.
ARREST AFTER INTELLIGENCE INPUT
Authorities said the Uttar Pradesh ATS acted after receiving specific inputs about espionage activities involving the naval personnel.
Following verification of the information, the agency moved to arrest Kumar and began questioning him about his contacts and the information that may have been shared.
POSTED AT KOCHI NAVAL BASE
At the time of the alleged espionage activity, Kumar was serving at the Indian Navy’s base in Kochi under the Southern Command.
Officials said further investigation is underway to determine the extent of information shared and whether others may have been involved in the espionage network.
Security agencies are continuing to examine Kumar’s communications, financial transactions and contacts with suspected handlers linked to Pakistan’s intelligence apparatus.
