India, Jordan ink five agreements after talks between PM Modi and King Abdullah II in Amman

India and Jordan on Monday held talks on counter-terrorism, regional developments including Gaza, and bilateral cooperation, as the two sides signed five memoranda of understanding following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and King Abdullah II in Amman.

The talks focused on expanding cooperation in areas such as trade and investment, defence and security, counter-terrorism and de-radicalisation, fertilisers and agriculture, renewable energy and tourism. PM Modi praised King Abdullah II’s role in countering terrorism and extremism and reaffirmed India’s support for peace and stability in the region.

He arrived in Jordan on the first leg of a three-nation tour that will also take him to Ethiopia and Oman. The visit, the first full-fledged bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Jordan in 37 years, coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He was warmly welcomed at the airport in Amman by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan.

During his two-day visit, Modi met King Abdullah II at the Husseiniya Palace, where the two leaders held meeting followed by delegation-level talks. They reviewed bilateral ties and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Both sides reiterated their shared position against terrorism, extremism and radicalisation.

King Abdullah II conveyed strong support for India’s fight against terrorism and condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.

COOPERATION ACROSS SECTORS

The Prime Minister said India and Jordan would continue to work together to strengthen cooperation across sectors.

“I am confident that today’s meeting will give a new impetus and depth to India-Jordan ties,” Modi said, adding that cooperation would continue in areas such as trade, fertilisers, digital technology, infrastructure and people-to-people ties.

Following the talks, the two sides signed five MoUs:

1. MoU on Technical Cooperation in the Field of New and Renewable Energy
2. MoU on Cooperation in the field of Water resources Management & Development
3. Twinning Agreement between Petra and Ellora
4. Renewal of the Cultural Exchange Programme for the years 2025-2029
5. Letter of Intent on Cooperation in the field of sharing successful digital solutions implemented at a population scale for digital transformation

Noting that India is Jordan’s third-largest trading partner, PM Modi proposed increasing bilateral trade to USD 5 billion over the next five years from the current level of USD 2.8 billion. He also called for collaboration between Jordan’s digital payment system and India’s Unified Payments Interface.

PM PRAISES JORDAN’S ROLE ON COUNTER-TERRORISM

PM Modi appreciated the Jordanian king’s role in addressing terrorism, extremism and radicalisation and his contribution to the global fight against these challenges. He also praised King Abdullah II’s “active and positive role” on the Gaza issue.

Recalling past engagements, the PM said the two leaders had earlier participated in a conference on Islamic heritage during King Abdullah II’s visit to India in 2018.

“Your efforts to promote moderation are extremely important not only for regional peace but also for global peace,” he said.
