Hume Hwy closed in both directions after batteries cause truck fire at Yass, NSW

A B-double truck has burst into flames on the Hume Hwy at Yass, NSW.

The national inter-city highway has been closed to traffic in both directions after the blaze erupted about 9.30am.

“Lithium-ion batteries are burning and releasing smoke from a trailer alight,” Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) said.

Traffic is being diverted via Yass Valley Wy and the Barton Hwy in both directions, according to Live Traffic NSW.

Motorists in the area should expect delays of up to 90 minutes.

“The Hume Hwy will be closed for an extended period,” FRNSW said.

While emergency services bring the fire under control, residents have been warned to avoid the area.

“If you reside in Yass Valley area and suffer respiratory illness or injury, close windows, vents and doors and stay indoors,” FRNSW said.

“Avoid going outdoors where possible.”
