After swimming into theaters and VOD this summer, Japanese horror comedy Hot Spring Shark Attack is gearing up to unleash even more shark madness with a new sequel.

The Hot Spring Shark Attack 2 (aka Onsen Shâku 2) also comes with a new teaser and first look images that expand the Tokusatsu (Japan’s unique style of special effects filmmaking) horror-comedy madness.

Filming began in June and is now in post-production with a Summer 2026 target release.

In the sequel, “A massive swarm of clone sharks rises from hot springs and volcanoes, leading to a jaw-dropping showdown that throws all of Kyushu into total chaos! The story follows a high school girl, Tenma, and her bond with the Onsen Shark, ‘Colombre’, through her singing voice. That very song that ultimately becomes the key to saving the world.”

The shark madness is expanding across the entire Kyushu region this time, delivering even bigger action set against the backdrop of hot spring culture. Filming took place in Atami City (Shizuoka Prefecture), Oguni Town (Kumamoto Prefecture), and Sukagawa City (Fukushima Prefecture), with the goal of pioneering a new approach to filmmaking through close collaboration with local communities.

All of this coincides with the launch of Hot Spring Shark Attack 2’s new Kickstarter campaign to further refine the film’s VFX and create English subtitles. For reference, the original film also launched a Kickstarter campaign that promised to add an additional shark into the feature film for every new subscriber, resulting in a whopping 432 sharks featured in Hot Spring Shark Attack.

That reward is once again an option for this campaign, dangling the potential for an even greater number of sharks this round.

Returning writer/director Morihito Inoue said in a statement, “A shark movie that was supposed to quietly disappear within Japan has, against all odds, gone on to be released worldwide, and now, we’re making a sequel! We’ve kept everything fans loved about the first film, but boosted it up even more, and we can’t wait to share this bigger, better experience with audiences around the world!”
