State Senator Nick Collins today announced that the 2026 South Boston St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast will be dedicated to Michael Flaherty Sr., a lifelong South Boston resident whose career in public service and community leadership helped shape the traditions the neighborhood celebrates each year.

A proud son of South Boston, Flaherty attended South Boston High School before serving in the United States Navy aboard the USS Northampton.

After returning home from military service, he continued his education, earning a Bachelor’s degree from Boston College and later a Juris Doctor from New England Law Boston, beginning a career in law and public service.

In 1967, Flaherty was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he represented South Boston for 24 years. During his time in the Legislature, he remained closely connected to the neighborhood he represented and built a reputation as a strong advocate for the community.

Following his time in the Legislature, Flaherty continued serving the public as a judge, bringing decades of experience and commitment to the bench.

Beyond his work in government, Flaherty played an important role in the civic life of South Boston. Through his work with the South Boston Citizens Association, he helped strengthen and elevate the neighborhood’s celebration of St. Patrick’s Day and Evacuation Day, traditions that remain central to the community today.

“Michael Flaherty Sr. represents the very best of South Boston,” said Senator Collins. “He served his country in the Navy, represented his neighborhood in the Legislature, served the public as a judge, and worked through the South Boston Citizens Association to help build the traditions that bring this community together every year. It’s hard to think of someone who better reflects what this celebration is all about.”

Each year, the St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast brings together community leaders, elected officials, and residents to celebrate the neighborhood’s history and traditions. This year’s dedication recognizes the lasting impact Michael Flaherty Sr. had on both the community and the celebrations that continue to define South Boston.
