Higher Petrol Levy Adding Millions to Govt Revenue Each Day

Higher petrol consumption in Pakistan is generating additional revenue for the government after recent increases in the petroleum levy, sources said.

According to officials, the government is earning about Rs. 90 million in extra revenue every day due to the higher levy on petrol. So far, roughly Rs. 500 million has been collected under the revised levy structure.

If the current consumption trend continues, the government could generate an additional Rs. 3 billion to Rs. 3.5 billion in revenue over a month.

Pakistan’s daily consumption of petroleum products is around 55 million litres. Petrol consumption accounts for about 22,000 tonnes per day, while high-speed diesel consumption stands at 19,000 tonnes daily.

Following the recent revision in fuel prices, the petroleum levy on petrol has been raised to Rs. 105.37 per litre, an increase of Rs. 20.97 per litre.

Because petrol consumption is higher than diesel, the increased levy on petrol is contributing significantly to government revenue. Meanwhile, the levy on high-speed diesel has been reduced by Rs. 20.97 per litre to Rs. 55.24 per litre.
