Google is revamping Google Translate by adding Gemini capabilities to improve translations, especially for phrases with nuanced meanings such as idioms, local expressions, and slang.
Google said the update delivers state‑of‑the‑art translation quality. It is available in Google Search and in the Translate app on iOS and Android.
The update is rolling out today in the US and India. It supports translations between English and “nearly 20 languages,” including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German.
Google is also introducing a new beta experience that lets users hear real‑time translations in their headphones. Google said this feature preserves each speaker’s tone, emphasis, and cadence to create more natural translations and make it easier to follow along.
To use it, users put on headphones, open the Translate app, and tap Live Translate.
This beta is rolling out in the Translate app on Android in the US, Mexico, and India. More than 70 languages are supported. Google said it will expand to more places and come to iOS in 2026.
Google also said its language learning tools in Translate now provide improved feedback, including tips based on speaking practice. Google added that users can challenge themselves and work toward learning goals by tracking how many days in a row they have been learning.
Google said the learning tools are expanding to “nearly 20 new countries” and territories, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan.
