It’s a win for movie lovers and the Glenelg community, with the local cinema officially saved from closure, just a week after Event Cinemas confirmed it would shut its doors for good.
Wallis Entertainment has announced it will take over the Glenelg Cinema from March 27, stepping in after Event’s final screening on March 23 and ensuring the much-loved venue remains part of the Jetty Road precinct.
The news comes as a relief for the community, following the announcement that the six-screen complex, a staple for beachside movie nights, date nights and family outings, would close after a decade in operation.
Now, South Australian family-owned cinema chain Wallis is bringing the venue back to life, marking a return to Glenelg with a focus on continuity and local connection.
The transition follows Event Cinemas’ departure and will see South Australian cinema and hospitality chain, Wallis Entertainment return to the Glenelg community with a focus on continuity, customer experience and long-term investment in local entertainment.
“Glenelg has always held a special place in our hearts,” said Deanna Wallis, Director, Wallis Entertainment.
“This is a real good-news moment for Glenelg; maintaining its shared place where families, friends and the community come together,” she said.
“Our priority is simple: keep the doors open, keep the screens on, and keep cinema in Glenelg for the long term.”
Wallis Entertainment confirmed it will continue to work closely with landlord Andrew Taplin and the Taplin Group.
“We’re pleased to be working with the Taplin Group to secure the future of the Glenelg Cinema,” Wallis said. “There is great synergy in two South Australian family businesses working together, and we’re excited to bring fresh energy, local commitment and a clear plan for what comes next.”
The cinema originally opened in 2016, bringing a boutique-style movie experience back to the bay, complete with licensed bar, lounge spaces and premium seating.
Its closure had highlighted the ongoing challenges facing cinemas globally, from pandemic disruptions to the rise of streaming platforms. For locals, it means the tradition continues, popcorn in hand, just steps from Jetty Road.
