A 23-year-old woman from the Wave City police station area in Ghaziabad died on Sunday while undergoing treatment after allegedly consuming sulphas, a highly-toxic insecticide.
The woman has been identified as Karishma, daughter of Pawan Verma. Her family said she was admitted to hospital in a critical state on Saturday and passed away the following day. Police have sent the body for post-mortem and begun an investigation.
Karishma’s father has accused her childhood friend Shivangi of conspiring with her sister-in-law Sapna, a friend Rahul and another Delhi-based man, Rahul Jain, to siphon off around Rs 25-30 lakh from Karishma’s bank account. According to the family, the accused lured her and got the money transferred into their own accounts.
When Karishma later asked for her savings back, she was subjected to mental harassment and blackmail, the family claimed. Under sustained stress, she took the extreme step.
Karishma’s family revealed that she had made a similar suicide attempt about seven months ago. A complaint was lodged at Wave City police station at the time. The family alleged that no effective action was taken at the time. The matter later reached court, after which the accused side issued cheques worth several lakhs. The case is currently pending.
Police said preliminary findings point to a dispute between the two sides over financial transactions. They also said the accused party has filed a complaint under the SC/ST Act.
Officials added that all angles are being probed and further legal action will depend on the post-mortem report and available evidence.
