The second season of the GATE anime is scheduled to begin airing in 2027. A trailer was released with the announcement.
The reveals were accompanied by the launch of a “support campaign” that will run until May 27. There are seven tiers, with the final Admiral tier offering a cameo as a background character and a spot in the opening credits among its rewards.
GATE Season 2: Tides of Conflict (GATE Season 2: Jieitai Ka no Umi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri) is the follow-up to 2015’s GATE, which ran for two split cours. The anime are based on Takumi Yanai‘s Alphapolis-published light novel series, which started in 2010 and entered “Season 2” in 2017. Hanashi Media describes the light novel series, which is illustrated by Daisuke Izuka (tankobon version) and Kurojishi (bunkobon version) as such:
In the year 20XX, a mysterious gate to another world suddenly opens in Tokyo’s Ginza district. From beyond it pour invading armies and monstrous creatures from a fantasy realm. Japan’s Self-Defense Forces repel the attack-and push forward through the gate into the unknown territory on the other side.
Among the soldiers sent to investigate is Yoji Itami, a 33-year-old otaku officer who is anything but a typical soldier. Leading his unit into the newly discovered world, he sets out to scout nearby villages and assess the situation beyond the gate.
What awaits them is not only danger¿ but the sight of fantastical races and beautiful girls straight out of a dream.
Thus begins the unprecedented encounter between modern military force and a medieval fantasy world, where guns meet dragons and diplomacy clashes with magic.
GATE Season 2 is set several years after the gate’s appearance and follows Petty Officer 2nd Class Hajime Tokushima of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). During his submarine’s mission to rescue an American journalist in the other world, the crew crosses paths with “Princess Primera Luna Avion of Tinae, Shura no Arch, a descendant of a family of righteous pirates, and Odette Ze Nebula, an Avi maiden who serves as Ship Guardian.”
The light novels have inspired a prequel, as well as manga adaptations and spin-offs. The GATE Season 2 manga by Satoru Sao debuted on February 27, the same date as the new anime’s trailer and premiere date reveals.
The first season of the anime was directed by Takahiko Kyogoku at A-1 Pictures.
