Round 23 result

2-2 draw against Perth Glory (H), 2-1 loss to Melbourne City (A)
Brisbane Roar:
0-0 draw against Sydney FC (H)

Central Coast were punished for their slow start against Perth last week, needing to come from two goals down to nab a point.

They didn’t fair any better in their midweek clash against Melbourne City, going down 2-0 again and only being able to grab a late consolation goal through Ali Auglah to make it 2-1.

Auglah only joined Central Coast in January after winning the Australian Championship Golden Boot with Sydney Olympic and he’s already solidified his spot in the Mariners starting XI, scoring four goals from his 11 appearances.

Brisbane’s defence was back to its best against Sydney last week, starving them of attacking opportunities and keeping their first clean sheet since the middle of December.

The Roar are still winless in their last nine matches and are dropping perilously close to the bottom of the table, just four points above last placed Western Sydney.

The Mariners took the points when these sides met in February, Nick D’Agostino opened the scoring for Brisbane before Miguel Di Pizio and Storm Roux pulled the Mariners back in front.

Round 23 result
Auckland FC:
1-1 draw against Adelaide United (A)
Melbourne Victory: 1-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix (H)

Both Auckland and Melbourne Victory spurned their opportunities to put pressure on Newcastle last weekend with a draw and loss respectively.

Auckland being held to 1-1 against Adelaide United kept them in second and three points off the Jets, while the Victory’s poor showing at home saw them take their first loss since the 1st of February and drop to fourth spot.

Melbourne Victory will be without Shark Player of the Month Juan Mata for at least this match and probably more, the Spaniard being sent for surgery on a fractured elbow this week.

Auckland too have their own injury concerns with Guillermo May missing this match with concussion, Jake Brimmer set to miss out with a calf injury and goalkeeper Michael Woud joining Oliver Sail on the sidelines with a groin issue leaving James Hilton as the starting keeper.

These sides played out a 0-0 draw when they met at AAMI Park in Round 1.

Newcastle Jets v Adelaide United

Round 23 result
Newcastle Jets:
3-2 loss to Macarthur FC (A)
Adelaide United: 1-1 draw against Auckland FC (H)

Newcastle escaped their loss to Macarthur rather unscathed, with Victory losing their match and Auckland and Adelaide sharing the points at Coopers Stadium.

The Jets equalised twice against Macarthur with Xavier Bertoncello scoring a brace, but they had no answer for the Bulls’ third goal.

Ethan Alagich gave Adelaide the lead against Auckland before conceding the equaliser early in the second half.

Newcastle were in the middle of their dominant winning streak when these sides last met, a Clayton Taylor hat-trick saw the the Jets defeat Adelaide’s two goals from Juan Muñiz and Yaya Dukuly.

Western Sydney Wanderers v Sydney FC

Current table position
Western Sydney Wanderers: 12th
Sydney FC: 5th

Round 22 result
Western Sydney Wanderers: 3-0 loss to Melbourne City (A)
Sydney FC: 0-0 draw against Brisbane Roar (A)

The final Sydney Derby of the season sees Sydney FC aiming to get back into the top four and Western Sydney trying to get off the bottom of the table and avoid getting the wooden spoon in both the Isuzu UTE A-League and Ninja A-League this season.

The Wanderers started well against City, though they couldn’t get themselves a goal before City scored and sent the Wanderers back into their shell.

Sydney haven’t won in four matches now, and they struggled to find their way to goal in their match against Brisbane.

Western Sydney shocked Sydney to win the first derby of the season with an Alou Kuol goal, before the Sky Blues took an emphatic 4-1 victory in the second derby combatting Ryan Fraser’s first minute opener with two goals from Tiago Quintal and a goal each from Marcel Tisserand and Victor Campuzano.

Melbourne City v Wellington Phoenix

Sunday, April 12 – AAMI Park – 3:00pm AEST

MATCH CENTRE | BUY TICKETS | HOW TO WATCH

Current table position
Melbourne City: 6th
Wellington Phoenix: 8th

Round 23 result
Melbourne City:
3-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers (H), 2-1 win over Central Coast Mariners (H)
Wellington Phoenix: 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory (A)

City are coming off the back of a very good week, with two wins at home bringing them back into the top six.

Aurelio Vidmar’s side weathered the early advances of Western Sydney, before taking their chances to disappear into the distance with a 3-0 lead on Saturday night, before holding off Central Coast’s late fight back to win 2-1.

Wellington get their second match at AAMI Park in-a-row after their 1-0 win over a lacklustre Victory on Easter Sunday, Sander Kartum scoring in the dying minutes to bring the Phoenix within three points of the top six.

This match should be a good contest, with both City and Wellington on four league match unbeaten runs.

These sides played out a 2-2 draw when they last met, a double from Ifeanyi Eze being cancelled out by goals from Marcus Younis and Medin Memeti.

Perth Glory v Macarthur FC

Sunday, April 12 – HBF Park – 7:00pm AEST

MATCH CENTRE | BUY TICKETS | HOW TO WATCH

Current table position
Perth Glory: 11th
Macarthur FC: 7th

Round 23 result
Perth Glory:
2-2 draw against Central Coast Mariners (A)
Macarthur FC: 3-2 win over Newcastle Jets (H)

Perth let a two goal lead slip against Central Coast to fall to their eighth-straight game without a win.

It’s now been 11 matches since Perth last kept a clean sheet, their defence one of the leakiest in the league despite keeper Matthew Sutton’s 75 saves from 23 matches this season.

Macarthur have taken a pair of big scalps in recent weeks to keep their finals aspirations on track, first defeating second placed Auckland, then taking win over league-leaders Newcastle Jets.

Before this the Bulls were on a six game winless run that saw them drop out of the top six, but a win here can get them back in as high as fifth.

Some late drama saw these sides share the points when they met in early February; Nicholas Pennington gave Perth the lead, then goals from Mitch Duke and Callum Talbot swung it back Macarthur’s way before Stefan Colakovski brought Perth back level with a stoppage time equaliser.
