As thousands of footy fans prepare to head to Adelaide for AFL Gather Round this April, a returning health initiative is shining a light on a serious issue that often goes unnoticed, skin cancer.
Running from April 9th to 12th, the Australian Skin Cancer Foundation will once again bring its mobile Skin Check Truck to the heart of the action at Adelaide Oval, offering free, professional skin checks to the public. No bookings are required, with walk-ins welcome (though spots are limited and subject to capacity).
The initiative follows a strong response in 2025, when more than 300 people took the opportunity to get checked during Gather Round. Of those, 63 suspicious spots were identified, including 13 suspected melanomas, an outcome that highlights just how critical early detection can be.
This year, the experience has been taken up a notch. The Foundation’s next-generation mobile clinic is equipped with a world-first 3D VECTRA imaging system, allowing for comprehensive full-body skin assessments. The advanced technology not only improves clinical accuracy but also helps patients better understand their skin health through detailed imaging and reporting.
With South Australia experiencing high UV levels for much of the year, and large crowds expected to spend long days outdoors at the footy, the timing couldn’t be more important. The message is simple, getting your skin checked could save your life.
The mobile clinic itself represents a significant step forward in accessibility. Since launching its first Skin Check Truck in 2023, followed by a second upgraded vehicle in late 2025 complete with a biopsy room and advanced imaging technology, the Foundation has been on a mission to bring vital health services directly to the community.
By travelling to major events like Gather Round, as well as regional towns and workplaces, the initiative is helping to break down barriers that often prevent people from seeking early screening.
So while you’re heading along for a weekend of footy, food and festivities, consider making time for something that could make a real difference. It’s quick, it’s free, and it might just be the most important thing you do all weekend.
