Getting around Adelaide on New Year’s Eve just got a whole lot easier, with free public transport and extra services running across the city and suburbs to help South Australians celebrate safely.
From 5pm on New Year’s Eve through to 6am on Wednesday 1 January 2026, all bus, train and tram services across the metro network will be free, making it simple to head out for celebrations and get home again without worrying about parking, traffic, or driving late at night.
Whether you’re staying local at a mate’s place or heading into the city for fireworks, food and festivities, the free travel window covers the busiest part of the night and the early hours of New Year’s Day. Additional services will also be running to help manage increased demand, with passengers encouraged to plan ahead and leave the car at home.
While most of the network will operate as usual, travellers are advised to be aware of temporary changes on the Glenelg tram line. The line will be closed between South Terrace and Moseley Square due to major works as part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects. To keep people moving, substitute bus services will operate throughout the night, providing a seamless alternative for passengers heading to and from the coast.
Trams will continue to operate as normal between South Terrace and the Royal Adelaide Hospital, as well as between the Botanic Gardens and the Entertainment Centre, ensuring key city routes remain active during peak celebration times.
Cricket fans are also set for a smooth run, with those attending the Adelaide Strikers Big Bash League match able to access free public transport from 3pm simply by showing their match ticket. It’s a handy bonus for anyone planning to roll straight from the game into New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Adelaide Metro spokesperson Michelle Spagnoletti said the extended free travel was all about making New Year’s Eve safer and easier for everyone. “Whatever your plans are this New Year’s Eve, Adelaide Metro will get you there and back easily and safely,” she said. “We’ve got you covered with free travel and heaps of additional bus, trains and trams to get you home safely – no matter how you’re celebrating.”
She also encouraged people to think twice before driving on one of the busiest nights of the year. “There’s no need to risk it behind the wheel, simply hop on board and enjoy your night,” she said.
Passengers are urged to plan their journeys in advance via Adelaide Metro or by calling the Adelaide Metro InfoLine on 1300 311 108, particularly if travelling late at night or using substitute services.
With free fares, extra services and late-night options across the network, Adelaide Metro is making it easy for South Australians to welcome 2026 without the stress — or the car keys.
