While many locals already know the brand from its 27 locations across SA, this Hutt Street venue is shaping up to be something a little different. Led by Lena Woods, the new cafe is taking the bones of what St Georges does best and reworking it with a new menu and a purposefully relaxed atmosphere.
“We have gone with something a little bit more colourful. It’s going to be a comfy, chill vibe with beautiful greens and blue tones, but still keeping our famous St Georges black-and-white,” Lena said.
St Georges Bakehouse Hutt Street is set to open on Saturday 31 January. The new venue sits at Level 1/199 Hutt Street, inside the former Cibo Espresso site, which closed its doors last year. The heritage building, leafy outlook and neighbouring florist were all big drawcards, with the team keen to make the most of the indoor-outdoor set-up.
Inside, the heritage feel has been carefully retained, with extra colour, artwork and playful details layered throughout. There are even a few cheeky surprises tucked into the bathrooms and wall art for those paying attention.
On the menu, expect the popular St Georges staples, but with a noticeable evolution. Alongside bakery favourites and coffee, the Hutt Street cafe will introduce new dishes, a broader a la carte offering, and a licensed bar pouring wine, beer and cocktails.
“We’ve added a few more items to our menu, and we also plan on having the beautiful aesthetic outside where you can come have breakfast or lunch and chill under the beautiful trees.”
A highlight to watch for on the breakfast menu is the Queen’s Breakfast, featuring sourdough, poached eggs, smoked salmon, feta and cherry tomatoes. There’s also a new canning machine allowing drinks to be customised and sealed to go.
The venue will trade later than most St Georges locations, with plans to cater to nearby businesses, corporate functions and private events. As the afternoons roll into evenings, Lena is keen for the space to become somewhere people settle in with a glass of wine and a cheeseboard beneath the trees.
