Wynn Vale has a new local cafe, and it’s bringing high-quality coffee, fresh-baked food and a laid-back neighbourhood vibe that lets the coffee speak for itself to Adelaide’s north-east.

Coffee + Crumbs officially opened its doors over the weekend, transforming a space that’s had many lives from a Video Ezy back in the days where they were rampant, and more recently a boxing gym.

Now, it’s a modern, minimalistic cafe with a calm air, and a framing that keeps it simple, and does the basics well.

Coffee + Crumbs has been in the works for some time, getting off the ground with several pop-up events last year before finally completing the fit out in February, ahead of the opening of owner Josh McManus’ first business.

“I’ve always had a huge passion for coffee and food,” Josh says. He comes from a background working on the other side of hospitality in food distribution warehouses. The opportunity to open a cafe came when a vacant shopfront was spotted in the same group of shops as Josh’s partner’s hair salon.

His calm response to the opportunity of a lifetime was a simple, confident, “why not?”

Before he could open the cafe, it needed a decent amount of TLC and a complete refit of the interior.

“It was literally a blank canvas before. It was just concrete floors, and that’s it,” Josh says. “Now we’ve got walls, counters, all the machinery… full fit out.”

In fact, almost all of it was done by Josh himself.

“I’ve done all the cabinetry, all the fit out myself, pretty much.”

The result is a space that feels calm and welcoming, built around neutral tones and soft greenery.

“I’m trying to just keep it pretty simplistic. Neutral colours, warmth, a bit of greenery. Just nice chill spot to hang. Nothing too crazy, just a nice chill spot where you can relax, have a coffee.”

Josh admits he’s especially proud of one corner in particular, a gloss black acrylic logo mounted against a dark wall, topped with a planter box and paired with occasional chairs and a small coffee table.

Coffee, of course, is at the heart of Coffee + Crumbs (alongside crumbs, of course). Josh has partnered with Toby’s Estate, as one of just a handful of venues in SA that the company supplies.

“I think having what’s being voted among the world’s best coffee roasters in the cafe definitely makes us unique,” he says.

For Josh, the choice was deliberate.

“[The beans are] extremely versatile. If you like strong coffee, it delivers that. However, if you don’t like the bitterness of coffee, it also delivers that. It’s quite a smooth, almost fruity, chocolatey blend, but it still has that strength to it.”

On the food front, the offering is fresh, simple and made daily. Focaccias and pizzas headline the menu, alongside a rotating selection of pastries.

“All the focaccias are baked fresh that morning. Pizzas are baked fresh that morning, on sourdough bases, so a bit lighter than your traditional pizzas,” Josh says. “We find it’s a bit fresher, a bit lighter, fluffier, doesn’t hold in your stomach as much.”

There’s also croissants, tarts and fresh banana bread baked each morning, plus smoothies, protein shakes and milkshakes, with a matcha range and expanded drinks menu set to roll out in the coming weeks.

Opening weekend exceeded expectations.

“Saturday was quite busy. We had a big lineup, which was pretty cool to see. Wasn’t really expecting that,” Josh says. He says Sunday continued the party with a steady stream of happy customers rolling through.

With pop-ups already under his belt, he’s begun connecting with locals and is looking forward to settling into a rhythm.

It’s passion and a love for the lifestyle that’s built Coffee + Crumbs. “I just love food, love coffee, love chatting to people all day, and, figured why not?” Josh says.

Coffee + Crumbs is now open in the heart of Wynn Vale, serving up quality coffee and fresh bites from Tuesday to Friday, 7am to 4pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 2pm. Closed Mondays.
