Fans hoping to attend the 2026 World Cup final are facing record-breaking costs, with FIFA pricing the most expensive tickets at $10,990 (£8,333). This is believed to be the highest-ever general admission price for a football match.
The figure marks a sharp increase from the original bid proposal by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, which promised a maximum final ticket price of $1,550 (£1,174).
Prices had already climbed during initial sales to official supporters’ clubs in December, reaching as high as $8,680 (£6,581). However, the first open sale on Wednesday pushed prices even further. Category two tickets rose by 32.78%, increasing from $5,575 (£4,227) to $7,380 (£5,596), while category three tickets jumped 38.23% from $4,185 (£3,173) to $5,785 (£4,386).
FIFA’s use of dynamic pricing, combined with limited advance information about ticket availability, has made it difficult for supporters to plan their trips.
Prices on the official resale platform, which reopened on Thursday, have gone even higher. Some tickets have been listed at as much as $82,780 (£62,646) for a single seat, far exceeding face value.
The rising costs have drawn criticism from supporters and fan groups. Thomas Concannon of the Football Supporters’ Association described the situation as “yet another stain on FIFA’s ticketing sales.”
Some fans have already abandoned attempts to secure tickets and now plan to treat their trips as holidays instead of dealing with the stress of inflated prices.
With the cost of attending just a few matches now reaching thousands of dollars, access to the tournament is becoming increasingly limited, raising concerns about affordability and FIFA’s handling of ticket sales.
