Faisal Rehman Tells Why Pakistani Drama Industry Didn’t Make it To Netflix

Faisal Rehman is a seasoned, versatile, and renowned Pakistani television and film actor, and now a successful digital creator. He gained recognition through his hit roles in both films and dramas. He began his career at the age of fourteen and rose to fame as a film star. Fans especially loved his on-screen pairing with Babra Sharif. His notable TV dramas include Kaisi Aurat Hoon Main, Besharam, Vasl, Aatish, Ranjish Hi Sahi, Gumrah, Shahpar, Ghulam Gardish, Aur Zindagi Badalti Hai, Manay Na Yeh Dil, Khamoshiyan, Malaal, and many others. He was also praised for his performance in Hum TV’s drama serials Qarz-e-Jaan and Wafa Lazim to Nahi.

Recently, he appeared on Wasi Shah’s talk show Zabardast, where he opened up about why Pakistani dramas have not been able to reach global platforms like Netflix. He also stated that excellent actors are often not given enough creative or performance margin in dramas.

Talking about it, Faisal Rehman said, “I am not back on the TV screen; I am back on social media. I am really not interested in television because I did a serial after ten years, and I didn’t enjoy it. The recent work offers no improvement in craft and, secondly, there is zero margin for performance in the roles I am offered. What can an Abbu do in a drama? I did two serials. It’s not that I don’t want to play a father, but at least give the character a story. I am an actor, not a businessman who will produce projects for himself. I need a good story and a good director; I only know acting.”

Talking about Netflix, he said, “We are a small industry and content is being produced, but why has Pakistani content still not reached Netflix? Why don’t they work with us? Because we have nothing original to offer. What they want is already being offered by India. There is a lack of professionalism and a lack of strong story telling here. You are culturally influenced by India and end up making stories that follow Indian culture. How can you move forward like this?”
