Fairy Princess Minky Momo To Get New OVA

A new OVA for the Fairy Princess Minky Momo series has been announced.

Separately, animation studio Ashi Productions released a visual of the titular Minky Momo has part of its 50th anniversary plans. Hiroshi Watanabe, who worked as key animator and animation director on the first TV series and later became involved in character designing, storyboarding, and episode direction (the caption describes him as a main animator), drew the illustration.

The original Fairy Princess Minky Momo (Maho no Princess Minky Momo) TV anime premiered in 1982 and ran for 63 episodes. Kunihiko Yuyama (The Strongest King Encyclopedia ~The Ultimate Tournament~ and To Be a Pokémon Master: Ultimate Journeys: The Series, Pokémon: The First Movie director) served as chief director with series composition from Takeshi Shudo (Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back – Evolution and Pokémon: The First Movie scriptwriter). Crunchyroll describes the synopsis as such:

As humans lose sight of their dreams, Fenarinarsa, the land of dreams in the sky, is in danger of drifting away from Earth. In hopes of saving their land, the king and queen of Fenarinarsa send their daughter, Momo, to Earth to revive the dreams of mankind. With her transformative powers and loyal companions, the magical girl embarks on a quest to spread joy.

A new TV series titled Maho no Princess Minky Momo Yume o Dakishimete started airing in 1991. There were also OVA like 1985’s Maho no Princess Minky Momo Yume no Naka no Rinbu, 1993’s Minky Momo in Yume ni Kakeru Hashi, and 1994’s Minky Momo in Tabidachi no Eki.

A Minky Momo revival was announced in 2009. Shudo passed away in 2010.
