Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Abbas has signed a two-year contract with Derbyshire, further cementing his status as one of the most sought-after players in county cricket.
With previous stints at Leicestershire, Hampshire, and Nottinghamshire, Abbas continues to be a prized asset on the English county circuit.
The experienced seamer arrives at Derbyshire after playing a key role in Nottinghamshire’s County Championship triumph last season.
Despite Derbyshire competing in Division Two, Mohammad Abbas was convinced to make the move by Head of Cricket Mickey Arthur, his former international coach. The 35-year-old, however, has made it clear that his ambition is to spend only one season outside the top division, with promotion firmly in sight.
“I’m really looking forward to joining Derbyshire and working with Mickey Arthur again,” Abbas said. “He’s an outstanding coach, and after hearing his vision for the club, it’s clear we share the same goal: to take Derbyshire into Division One. The team narrowly missed promotion last season, and I’m hopeful I can help turn close results into wins and give the fans something special to celebrate.”
Abbas boasts an impressive Test record, having claimed 100 wickets at the highest level, including a standout 6 for 54 against South Africa last year. His ability to thrive in English conditions is well established following successful spells with multiple county sides.
Arthur described the signing as a major boost for the club. “This is a significant acquisition for Derbyshire,” he said. “We’ve managed to secure one of the best red-ball bowlers in the game despite competition from Division One teams. Mohammad brings control, consistency, and the ability to apply sustained pressure, but just as important is the experience he offers to our younger players.”
Abbas will represent Derbyshire during the 2026 and 2027 county seasons.
