England security guard lashes out at Channel 7 camera operator in ugly ‘confrontation’ at airport

The Ashes rivalry has extended beyond the playing field, with an overzealous security guard involved in an ugly incident at Brisbane Airport on Saturday.

As England players prepared to depart Brisbane for Adelaide ahead of the third Test, Channel 7 cameras were there to film the run-of-the-mill exercise, as they have throughout the series.

But camera operator Nick Carrigan has been left shocked after what unfolded.

The experienced Carrigan clearly respected the unwritten rules of not getting too close, but the security guard still made it his mission to block and disrupt the shots.

“I’m standing, I’m just standing here, mate,” the security guard can he heard saying.

England’s players were unbothered by the unfolding situation as the security guard even pushed away the players he was meant to be protecting to block the cameras.

“Get out of my face mate, out my face, out my face!” the security guard can be heard yelling.

It dragged on for some time, all the way to the next terminal.

“I’m allowed to go in,” Carrigan says.

“Go in then, I’m not stopping you,” the security guard quickly replied.

Both men — doing their jobs — albeit on very different levels.

7NEWS has been in Noosa all week with the England team without incident.

“They were friendly with us and yeah this didn’t happen up there so it came as quite a shock when it happened,” Carrigan said.

“I understand he’s got a job to do but yeah that was totally uncalled for.”

Players haven’t shied away from the cameras at all, despite suffering two heavy defeats in the first two Tests.

“Earlier today, there was an incident at Brisbane Airport involving a 7NEWS camera operator and a member of the England Cricket team’s travelling party,” Seven Network said in a statement.

“While conducting routine filming in a public space, the camera operator was physically confronted despite acting respectfully and professionally.

“The safety and wellbeing of our staff is paramount. This matter is being taken seriously and is now being managed through the appropriate channels.”

After arriving in Adelaide, English players were happy to chat.

“We’re refreshed and ready to go,” captain Ben Stokes said.

But the security guard retreated.

Meanwhile, Australian players were all smiles as they posed for selfies without a security guard in sight.

The third Test begins at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.
