After a long wait, the elections to choose the 13 members of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC) will be held online on February 9, announced Director of Secondary Health K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu, who is also the and Returning Officer.

Addressing the media at his office in Tadepalli on Monday, Mr. Chakradhar Babu pointed out that the elections are being conducted following the A.P. High Court’s recent directive that the elections should be held immediately. Mr. Chakradhar Babu added that for the first time in the State, the elections for the council members will be held via online mode. A notification has been issued to this effect on Monday, he said.

The council is a 23-member body, with 13 members elected by doctors, six nominated posts and four ex-officio members. The last time elections were held to choose 13 members was in 2006. The council functioned with an incomplete body for a long time. For nearly 10 months after formation of the NDA government, the State did not have a medical council until an interim council was constituted in March, 2025.

As per the Andhra Pradesh Medical Practitioners’ Registration Act, 1968, registered doctors, with qualifications of MBBS and more, are eligible to vote. At present, there are 55,504 doctors in the eligible voters’ list, of which 1,871 have renewed their registrations recently and 316 have registered in the past one month, the health official said.

Of the total registered doctors, only those who have been residing in the State for more than five years are eligible to vote. According to a press note from the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, eligible doctors can exercise their voting rights from any location. Nominations are accepted until January 27.

The final list of eligible contesting candidates will be announced on February 2. On February 9, voters can log in to the website apmc.ap.gov.in and cast their vote between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.. The results will be announced on February 10.

APMC Registrar I. Ramesh, who was also present in the press conference, said the elections are being held in a transparent manner as per the directions of the High Court.
