Diego Fagundez returns to the Revolution: The Revolution’s original homegrown player has returned to where his MLS career began at the age of 16.
Diego Fagundez, 31, is now a 16-year MLS veteran. On Friday, the Revolution announced that the Uruguayan native (who grew up in Leominster) was signing a one-year contract that also includes a club option for the 2027 MLS season. The attacking midfielder could add much-needed firepower to a New England lineup that has looked in need of reinforcements through the first two games of the 2026 MLS season (both of which were losses).
From making his team debut as a teenager (a game in which he scored) through the ensuing decade, Fagundez made himself a fixture in New England soccer from 2011-2020. He was the first “Homegrown Player” signing for the Revolution in club history, setting a precedent that has been followed by an increasingly accomplished list of talented youngsters tracing his footsteps. He’s currently the MLS leader in terms goal contributions among active players (79 goals and 79 assists over 424 regular season appearances).
“When I left New England, I knew I wanted to return here one day to play for the fans who have supported me since I was a teenager,” Fagundez said per the club’s announcement. “I feel I have grown tremendously both on and off the pitch over these last few years. My family and I are so excited to be back with the club that gave me my first professional opportunity. The Revolution and our supporters have always held a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to take the pitch at Gillette Stadium again soon representing my boyhood club.”
The club shared a video of Fagundez shortly before formally announcing his return:

After leaving the Revolution, Fagundez enjoyed success with both Austin FC and the Los Angeles Galaxy (where he won the 2024 MLS Cup).
He heads back into a New England setup that has struggled out of the gate. The Revolution lost the season-opener against Nashville on Feb. 21, 4-1. The team then dropped its second game against the Red Bulls 1-0.
Adding some skill and experience to the attack could be what first-year head coach Marko Mitrović needs to get into the win column.
New England’s home opener is set for Sunday against FC Cincinnati at 2:30 p.m.
Trivia: Diego Fagundez ranks second in all-time Revolution goals in MLS. Can you name the player who ranks first on that list?
(Answer at the bottom).
Hint: The 2005 MLS MVP, he’s now a TV commentator.

Speaking of Gillette Stadium: Grass has been laid down on the field ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This also means that the two local soccer teams, Legacy FC and the Revolution, will play on it over the next several months.

Celtics movie night: The day prior to the matchup with the Thunder, Boston players enjoyed a movie together. This led to some enjoyable banter, and possibly a concerning amount of butter Jaylen Brown put on his popcorn.

On this day: In 2018, the Bruins scored three goals in rapid succession to tie things up against the Hurricanes. David Pastrnak notched a hat-trick, and Boston ended up winning 6-4 thanks to five unanswered third period goals.
Daily highlight: Though it’s not the kind of highlight Bruins will particularly enjoy rewatching, it’s important to give credit where it’s due with this skillful William Eklund finish.
