The United Democratic Front (UDF) has claimed that development works worth over ₹700 crore were implemented in the Kannur Corporation in the past five years.
Addressing the media, District Congress Committee president Martin George, Indian Union Muslim League district president Abdul Kareem Cheleri, Mayor Musliah Madathil and UDF election committee chairman T.O. Mohanan said the front was facing the election with “full confidence” and highlighted infrastructure projects and welfare schemes implemented in the Corporation under the UDF rule.
They mentioned projects such as the ₹27-crore sewage treatment plant at Padanapalam, the ₹12.5-crore multi-level parking facility for 155 cars, renovation of the Jawahar stadium, the 5.41-crore city beautification project, modern bus shelter, Nehru park at Chelora, freedom park and open gyms worth ₹50 lakh.
They also highlighted the installation of CCTV cameras at 100 points for waste-free city initiatives, the setting up of health and wellness centres, the construction of a ₹5.6-crore breakwater at Payyambalam to prevent saltwater intrusion and job fairs that “provided employment to 3,000 people”.
UDF leaders criticised the Left Democratic Front (LDF) for releasing an ‘AI promotional video’ claiming to transform Kannur, saying the LDF had failed to implement major projects during its term.
They also accused the LDF and the State government of derailing Corporation projects. The UDF also announced ‘Mission 2030’, a comprehensive master plan for the holistic development of Kannur town and nearby areas, to be unveiled on Saturday. The plan includes sector-specific proposals covering Scheduled Castes, fisherfolk, women, children, youth, senior citizens, and key infrastructure and welfare needs.
