Megan Whiting was “armed with a knife within close proximity of an injured female resident” when an officer fired, authorities say.

Authorities have released additional details following a fatal police shooting early Monday morning that left a 27-year-old woman dead in New Hampshire.

Northfield and Tilton officers responded at 12:12 a.m. to a 911 call from an apartment at 20 Vine St. in Northfield reporting a domestic disturbance, according to a new statement from New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella.

The caller told dispatchers that Megan Whiting, 27, was striking another resident, the caller’s girlfriend, with a fire extinguisher and she was smashing objects and breaking a window, according to the statement. Dispatchers also reported hearing yelling in the background as the caller urged police to hurry.

When officers arrived about six minutes later, they entered the apartment and encountered Whiting “armed with a knife within close proximity of an injured female resident,” officials said.

Police repeatedly ordered Whiting to drop the knife before one officer discharged his firearm, striking her, authorities say. She was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and found Whiting’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds. Her manner of death was ruled a homicide, or “the killing of one person by another.”

No officers or additional civilians were physically injured, Formella noted. The condition of the injured woman has not been made public.

The identity of the officer who fired his weapon has not been released, pending formal interviews. There is also body camera footage from one responding officer that will not be released at this time, authorities said.

More information is expected following the completion of an interview with the involved officer.
