DanMachi is based on the SB Creative-published fantasy light novel series written by Fujino Omori and illustrated by Suzuhito Yamada. Yen Press describes the first volume of the books as such:
In Orario, fearless adventurers band together in search of fame and fortune within the monstrous underground labyrinth known as Dungeon. But while riches and renown are incentive enough for most, Bell Cranel, would-be hero extraordinaire, has bigger plans. He wants to pick up girls. Is it wrong to face the perils of Dungeon alone, in a single-member guild blessed by a failed goddess? Maybe. Is it wrong to dream of playing hero to hapless maidens in Dungeon? Maybe not. After one misguided adventure, Bell quickly discovers that anything can happen in the labyrinth–even chance encounters with beautiful women. The only problem? He’s the one who winds up the damsel in distress!
The light novels, which are under the GA Bunko label, began in January 2013 and have 21 volumes as of October 2025. Volume 21 marked the start of the final arc.
The DanMachi anime got its start in 2015 and entered its fifth season in October 2024. Due to production-related delays, the 15th and final episode of Season 5 had its premiere in early March.
The DanMachi franchise also features light novel spin-offs, manga, mobile games, and an anime movie. The Sword Oratoria spin-off inspired a 2017 TV anime.
